-----Professor
Byrne is a graduate in mechanical engineering from the Dublin Institute
of Technology, Trinity College Dublin and the Technical University
Berlin. He undertook his Doktor-Ingenieur degree in the field of
manufacturing processes specialising in material removal mechanisms and
surface integrity. He has over 30 years professional engineering and
management experience, 20 years in Ireland and 10 in Germany. He is the
Professor of Mechanical Engineering in University College Dublin and
held the posts of Head of the Department (1993 – 2005) and Dean of
Engineering at UCD (2005 – 2007). Prior to taking up his professorship
in 1993, he was employed by Daimler Benz in Germany in the Corporate
Research and Development Division. He has a top international profile
in his area of specialisation of Surface Engineering and Mechanisms of
Material Removal. He is currently President of the Collége
International pour L’Étude des Techniques de Production Méchanique
(C.I.R.P.). He is Past-President of the Institution of Engineers of
Ireland (2000/01) and also Past President of the Irish Academy of
Engineering (IAE, 2002 - 2003). He is Director of the Manufacturing
Research Centre at UCD. This Centre is active both nationally and
internationally in research and development into precision engineering
processes and has very close collaboration with industry. He is a
Fellow of three Academies of Engineering (Ireland, UK and Germany) and
holds an honorary doctorate in recognition of his outstanding
international contribution as an innovator in engineering. He is also
the 2010 Taylor Research Medal recipient of the Society of
Manufacturing Engineers, USA.

Networks in Manufacturing Engineering - the CIRP Example
|
|
|
|
|
|
------ In
this address, a review will be undertaken of some of the key questions
arising for manufacturing engineering research as we enter a new era in
competitive sustainable manufacturing. CIRP, The International Academy
for Production Engineering was founded in 1951 and we celebrate our
60th General Assembly in Pisa,
Italy
this August. CIRP is a global organization with over 40 countries on
its membership register. It is clear that the challenges in
manufacturing engineering which need to be addressed are not just those
of an individual country or of an individual group in the world, rather
they relate to every country i.e. they are global challenges. The
global challenges must be addressed based on solid, scientific methodologies
and foundations. CIRP has such foundations. In this Keynote Address,
Gerry BYRNE, the President of CIRP will give the background to this
international body and will outline the increasing importance and
necessity for high level, international research networks as we
progress in a world of diminishing resources, increasing population and
critical issues around reliability of energy availability.
